OCD Button Collecting and Horror Films

Last night I watched Suicide Club (or Suicide Circle) a Japanese horror film about well....I can't be certain. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the movie, but as many Asian horror films it tended to wander here and there. It is interesting (and not by coincidence) that it was made at a time when suicides in Japan were at an all time high. From what I read about it the director Sion Sono made it after a friend of his committed suicide.  So if you are looking for an uplifting movie to watch I would avoid watching this. Also, not a good first date movie.

In other news, I have been spending the day cleaning and organizing and realizing that I have a real problem with collecting buttons. Like I may need an intervention. Seriously.  Strangely my father also really likes collecting buttons so perhaps this condition is hereditary.  To ease my burden I am going to give away some of my buttons to one of you lucky readers. I have loads of super old vintage buttons and if you leave a little comment here I will choose someone at random and send you some.  Sound nice?

Man On Wire

 

Last night my other half and I saw an amazing documentary called 'Man on Wire.'  It is about a man named Philippe Petit , a Frenchman and self taught wire walker, who in 1974 wire walks across the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.  As someone who is terrified by heights I was both a nervous wreck and awestruck, watching as Mr. Petit gracefully moved across the wire as if he was on solid ground.  The story leading up to the great performance is just as entertaining, with interviews with Petit and his "accomplices" who helped him sneak into the Towers and rig his line.  I highly recommend this film and urge you to see it when it is officially released 8 August.

   

Fellini, Fairy Tales and Chocolate Pie

Last night was a good lazy time in which I sprawled on the couch, ate some chocolate pie and watched Fellini's Amarcord.  Nice.  My other half and I are now four movies into our Criterion marathon and I haven't written a single word on any of the films for the upcoming blog.  I am terrible at trying to articulate to others what exactly I find great or good or whatever about a movie without it sounding like I am trying to show off some film school credentials-which I don't have.  I am thinking of just writing a short blurb to summarize the film and whether I liked it or not.  Obviously I am not going to love every film in the Criterion Collection or possibly even like all of them (I'm looking at you Armageddon) but I want to get across more then a simple thumbs up or down.  Bah.  I guess I should stop procrastinating and actually write at least one review. 

Besides film watching, I also finished my wall hanging and it is now ready to be sold in the shop.  Pictures will be posted this evening in case any of you are just clamoring to get a look see.  As I think I said yesterday it is called 'Little Red Tames The Wolf' and is part of a new storybook themed collection.  The next one is going to be on Snow White and then possibly after that Hansel and Gretel.  As they progress I see them getting a little darker thematically.  Which is fitting since so many of the old fairy tales and folk tales have that sinister edge about them any way.   

Well, time to be productive.  Or at least pretend to be.

UPDATE: Here is the wall hanging I mentioned earlier.  It is now available for purchase in my shop. (Getting a proper shot of it in the frame is a pain.  I don't have good lighting anywhere but the kitchen.)

A Sleepy 4th and A Grand Illusion

Happy belated 4th of July.  I didn't really do anything particularly festive or interesting over the weekend.  I could hear the fireworks going off in the park near my house and watched a History Channel program on the presidents off and on-that was pretty much the extent of the celebration.  Other then that there was a lot of napping and movie watching going on.  My kind of weekend.

My other half and I decided that we are going to start a blog where we give our opinions on  the entire Criterion catalog, starting from the first release to the last.  The movie watching will begin this evening with Renoir's Grand Illusion.  I am so excited about it.  I love watching movies, especially when I can watch them on my comfy couch surrounded by yummy things to eat.  When the new blog is up I will link it to this one in case anyone is interested in that sort of film nerdiness. 

Well it is Monday.  And I wish I was still cozy in bed dreaming...
