Everything Old Is Modern Again: A Conversation With Liza Rietz

It's been awhile hasn't it?  Well you will happy to know that while I was absent from my blog responsibilities I was still productive.  The proof: this interview with the very talented (and extremely sweet) Liza Rietz. Her work is available in her Etsy shop as well as her B&M, Liza Rietz in Portland. So havea cup of tea and read how Ms. Rietz went from studying anthropology and sociology to becoming a self taught sewing wunderkind.

1. When did you first take an interest in clothing design?
From the minute I realized that my Barbies were in serious need of some better outfits.

2. How many years did it take you to feel confident in your ability to make a garment from scratch? Confident is the key word - because i started selling my designs in boutiques within one year of teaching myself to sew. I would definitely say that my confidence builds with every collection.

3. What is the process you use for coming up with your collections?
This is a very organic process. Inspiration comes from all over, but I can definitely say my designs reflect my emotional creative side - if i am feeling a color, a texture , a shape, I try to capture that through sketching. Conceptually, the challenge is to stay focused on the cohesiveness of my collection and make sure all the designs work harmoniously together. Technically, the challenge is to make a garment that is sculptural and interesting without sacrificing the natural shapes of the body. From my sketches I draft flat patterns, and manipulate and tweak ideas through draping. Eventually, a garment appears! My hope is that it balances on being artistic and functional.

4. Your items have a retro look to them but are very modern in their construction. How do you fuse those two sensibilities and make it work?
This is the constant balance for my designs: taking a vintage look and modernizing it. For example, in my last collection I was super fascinated with the designs of Erte and designs from 1910 - 1920 - i love the drape and cowls in the long dresses and the influence of Japanese design - kimono sleeves especially. I tried to take elements of these very ornate and sculptural pieces and put them on a modern woman. So in a sense, I had to make these designs functional and wearable. This leads me to balance functional and flattering fit with the sculptural and artistic elements.

5. How do you decide on materials to use? Did you take textile courses in college or do you just go with your gut? I only studied sociology and anthropology in college, so gut it is. I am completely self taught with designing and sewing. Textiles heavily influence and steer my designs. Again, my designs must be wearable and functional so this leads me to comfortable and natural fabrics like cotton, linen, silk and wools. I rarely use prints because i feel that solid colors don't distract from the sculptural and textural aspects of my work.

6. Why did you decide to open a brick and mortar shop and how long did it take you to do so? I have been designing, constructing, promoting, and selling my designs since 2001. This is hard work. I consigned and wholesaled for years and got to a point where i either had to start out sourcing my labor and turn to mass production, or i needed to scale back and do it the old fashioned way - with in-house design and construction. I opened my store in 2007. I am incredibly passionate about my work and it scares me to death to think of someone else making my garments in an environment that i am not a part of. I want to have my hands in every part. And, I find it so rewarding when a woman walks into my store, we look at my sample designs, she picks one out, we choose a fabric, we take her measurements and then me and my assistants make the piece in-house. This is a rewarding process, and a process that is increasingly rare in our modern day mass produced society.

7. Are there any other creative disciplines you haven't done but would like to try?
The list is endless.

8. What new projects do you have planned for 2009?
Spring '09 collection, Fall '09 Collection.

9. Who or what inspires you?
my mom.

10. In five years what would you like to be doing?
2014! I hope to be doing the same thing, with more assistants and in-house seamstresses to create a more productive pace. I hope to have two days off in a row! For REAL!

11. And this is something I always wonder when people design and create a clothing line-do you wear your own pieces?
If I am lucky, I keep a couple samples or rejects.

And just for fun:

12. Favorite colors?
gray, chartreuse, white (it is a color).

13. Last book you read?
"The Girl In the Flammable Skirt" - short stories by Aimee Bender

14. Your idea of the perfect day?
Sleep in. hot yoga. sushi.

15. Your favorite Etsy (or other DIY) seller.
My lovely friend and business partner Emily Ryan www.emilyryan.etsy.com

Vintage Button Winner And A Nice Dress

Thanks to everyone who participated in my little contest. I was going to post the winner yesterday but I was feeling terrible with a cold or flu or something. So better late then never...the winner of the vintage button contest is Sue!  Again thanks to all who participated.

As I stated above I have been sick and my level of motivation is zero.  I am in the midst of working on new items for Spring and will be posting them to my shop soon.  I am pretty excited with some of the things I have made so far but want to wait to post them until I have a solid collection.  I will also be having a big sale soon to clear out some old (but still lovely!) inventory.

Ok I need to do some work and take some medicine to rid me of this congestion. I will leave you with this dress that I really really adore.  So pretty!

My Life As A Redhead

So I decided to dye my hair red today and I have to say I really like it. It's a bit more exciting then the same old boring brown that I usually have. Don't get me wrong, I love brunettes, but my hair always seems to look so...blah.

Excuse the oh-so-serious expression and the uninspired photo. It's not easy taking a photo of yourself. In your bathroom. Um, yeah.

I also scored today at Target today in the shoe department.  I got a pair of boots, some black patent flats and running shoes for a grand total of 20$ and some change. I was going to take some photos of them but maybe later as my camera battery is currently charging.  But trust me they are cute. I also got some yoga pants since I am trying to talk myself into taking another Birkrim yoga class. For those of you not familiar with it, it's a 90 minute class done in a 105 degreeroom.  It is really brutal but afterward you feel so amazing.

Interviews and fun stuff to come. Stay tuned.

In Which Writing Is The Best And Worst Idea

I like to fancy myself a writer sometimes. When I'm bored of TV and can't think of another thing to make sometimes I will just sit at the computer and write-or just stare at the monitor intending to write. I had an idea to send off some of my "work" and did so last night on a whim although I have my doubts that anything will come of it.  But sometimes you just need to get things out there.  It helps if you have no high aspirations or ideas of being great so you don't get disappointed. The problem with writing for me is that it's hard for me to do it when I am feeling happy. So then I end up churning out a lot of really sad sounding things though I am not all that doom and gloom most of the time.

Anyway, I wrote a little something last night and thought I would "publish" here. I mean, why not. It could be ok, right?  And then I can say I am in fact a published writer. Because really it's all relative.

Ahem.

We Can’t All Be Lost

Down deep where it's all just guts

and the on and off

twinkling

of a ghost

or a soul

(depending on what you believe)

there is the tiniest fragment

of humanity and the

desire to be wanted

that even the darkness

can't snuff out.

Just because you can't see it

or touch it or taste it

doesn't mean it's dead.

The smallest hope,

burning like a flickering bulb.

In more optimistic and interesting news I am gearing up to do an interview with Liza Rietz an amazing clothing designer from Portland. You can also find more info about her here.

I'm glad the snow storm is over.

Tallying Up Loneliness, Notch By Notch

It's been snowing and icy and miserable for the last couple of days here and leaving my house has been nearly out of the question.  Even though I have finished several lingering projects I am really ready to get out of my house.  The dreaded cabin fever is upon me and I feel like taking a run outside despite the freezing weather. But since it's dark out I probably won't. There is only one thing to do when I get  in this mood-watch a movie and eat. Ok, maybe that was two things. No matter.  So I'm having my own film festival in an attempt to distract myself from the prison of my apartment.  On the list of possibilities:

I also have food on the way-thank god for delivery. Although I do feel a little bad making someone drive in this weather. But obviously not enough to cook something here. And whoever knows what song my title is taken from gets a gold star.

Hope you're warm wherever you are.

I Want Things

While browsing around this lady's blog I stumbled onto Supermarket (where said lady also sells her wares). I am sure I am waaaay late in finding this great site, but for those who don't know about it you must take a look.  Hours could be wasted looking at all the wonderful things for you and your home.  At the moment I am really smitten with this shirt:

Cute, no?  It's by the great minds of BeBack/Soon. Love.

And these sweet Rabbits? Yes Please.

OCD Button Collecting and Horror Films

Last night I watched Suicide Club (or Suicide Circle) a Japanese horror film about well....I can't be certain. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the movie, but as many Asian horror films it tended to wander here and there. It is interesting (and not by coincidence) that it was made at a time when suicides in Japan were at an all time high. From what I read about it the director Sion Sono made it after a friend of his committed suicide.  So if you are looking for an uplifting movie to watch I would avoid watching this. Also, not a good first date movie.

In other news, I have been spending the day cleaning and organizing and realizing that I have a real problem with collecting buttons. Like I may need an intervention. Seriously.  Strangely my father also really likes collecting buttons so perhaps this condition is hereditary.  To ease my burden I am going to give away some of my buttons to one of you lucky readers. I have loads of super old vintage buttons and if you leave a little comment here I will choose someone at random and send you some.  Sound nice?

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Stay warm.

Books And Ghosts And Things

I know I've been a bit of a ghost for the last month or so but you how life is-busy and unpredictable.  I wish I could report that lots of exciting things were going on in my world but really it's business as usual. I did update the shop with some trinkets for Valentines Day so take a peek if you are looking for something for someone you love. Or just someone you like.

Since New Years came and went and so has the talk of rresolutions I won't bore you with a list of mine. I will say that I do have a resolution to read all the books I own-which is a daunting task. Oh, and I did also commit to not buying any new books until I read the ones I have. That was an almost instant failure. At the moment I am reading this:

Republic_of_suffering

And this:

Days

I also have a nice stack of books next to my bed taunting me every time I walk in my room.  I'm not sure which to even read next. I don't know why I do this to myself. It's like I want to set myself up for failure.

And on a totally unrelated subject, I have been listening to this band non stop for a week. Check them out. Maybe they will be your new favorite too.

Changes

Well I had planned on doing UTR this week but I just do not have the time.  Hopefully after finals week things will slow down a bit and I can start posting more regularly again.  Fridays Handmade Holidays post should still go as planned but other then that I may be taking a bit of a blogging break.  I hope in the new year to do some changes to this blog and make it less of a promotional site and more of a site about me.  It could be disasterous (or just very dull) but it's my hope that it will make for a better quality and more personal blog.  I will still post things that I like from Etsy and elsewhere just not as much.

Other then that, just waiting for today to be over so I can finally get some sleep! Also, I started a shop on Art Fire (which I am really likeing at the moment) so if you want you can check it out here. They are still in the beta stage and so there are bugs and other annoying things but I like the layout.  We shall see if it stands the test of time-and if it surpasses or equals Etsy in its popularity.

Take care all and pardon me while I nap.

A Short Absence and Sparrow Fist Stocking Stuffers

I know it's been awhile since my last post but I have been very busy with school at the moment. Next week is finals so I have been in study mode.  But I will be posting the new edition of Handmade Holidays on Friday as well as UTR on Wednesday so there is something blog related to look forward to.  Last weekend was the Big Ass Indie Craft Show at the Mad Art Gallery which was lots of fun and was also profitable so that was cool. Its nice to get some extra cash before the holidays.  I haven't had much time for crafting but I did post a couple new things in the shop including a new feather headband, The Jazz Age, and a bird locket necklace.  More updates to the shop will hopefully) happen later this week or early next week in time for last minute holiday shopping.  I also have a new Under 12$ section in my shop perfect for stocking stuffers such as these little pretties:
